ROY Jones Jr is one of his victims. Rocky Balboa another. Now brash American Antonio Tarver is considering a blockbuster Australian bout with Danny Green.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal the fighter dubbed "Magic Man" - who played Mason "The Line" Dixon in Rocky Balboa - has reopened talks to fight for Green's IBO cruiserweight world title as early as July.

Despite initially knocking back an offer to fight Green in the States, Tarver this week had a series of discussions with the West Australian's trainer Angelo Hyder, who was in California with his other world champion Vic Darchinyan.

"And, mate, Tarver's exact words to me were 'tell that Danny Green I'm coming for him'," Hyder laughed last night. "So all we need to do now is work out a price.

"Because Antonio was originally all set to have a big fight against James Toney, but then Toney went and joined the UFC. So that pay day has gone. He now wants to come and fight in Australia if the money is right."

Golden Boy on ShoBox

For years, SHOWTIME® has featured boxing’s top prospects and future World Champions on its hit series ShoBox: The New Generation, giving boxing fans a glimpse of the World Champions of tomorrow today. On Friday, April 2, live on SHOWTIME, Golden Boy Promotions will to present its first event on the series.

Undefeated Cuban junior middleweight rising star Erislandy Lara puts his perfect record on the line against the always-dangerous Danny Perez in a 10-round main event and Puerto Rican featherweight standout Carlos Velasquez returns to dazzle fans in the co-feature on what promises to be a night to remember at The Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

“We’re proud to present our first ShoBox event and we promise that fans will see the quality of fights they’re accustomed to on the series,” said Oscar de la Hoya, President of Golden Boy Promotions. “Danny Perez will be Erislandy Lara’s toughest test to date and a fight I’m really looking forward to. I’m also excited to see Carlos Velasquez back in the ring and if he can be impressive on April 2 on ShoBox, the sky’s the limit for him.”

The doubleheader will headline an exciting night of professional boxing presented by Golden Boy Promotions and sponsored by Cerveza Tecate. It will air live on SHOWTIME at 11 p.m. ET/PT (delayed on the West Coast).

Tickets, priced at $100, $60 and $30, plus a limited number of $125 VIP and $25 standing room tickets, are on sale and may be purchased at the Hard Rock Hotel Box Office, all Ticketmaster locations, online at http://www.Ticketmaster.com or by phone (800) 745-3000.

Also competing on April 2 will be a host of Golden Boy Promotions’ undefeated rising stars, including Puerto Rico’s Hector Sanchez (18-0, 8 KO’s), 2008 U.S. Olympic Heavyweight Bronze medalist Deontay Wilder (8-0, 8 KO’s) and New Jersey’s Mike Perez (6-0-1, 3 KO’s).

Southpaw sensation Lara (10-0, 6 KO’s) has followed up a stellar amateur career in Cuba with the makings of a world championship run in the professional ranks. Unbeaten in 10 bouts, the 26-year-old native of Guantanamo went 7-0 with 4 knockouts in 2009, and in 2010 he’s picked up where he left off, halting veteran contender Grady Brewer in 10 rounds on Jan. 29 at The Joint. On April 2, he returns to the site of his greatest pro victory to date and hopes to make it two in a row against Perez.

Perez (34-6, 17 KO’s), of Carlsbad, Calif., knows all the tricks of the trade when it comes to the sweet science. The owner of five regional titles over the course of his career, Perez has faced the likes of Antonio Margarito, Jose Luis Zertuche, Grady Brewer, David Lopez and Eric Mitchell, and is looking forward to taking Lara into deep waters on April 2.

A member of the 2004 Puerto Rican Olympic team, Velasquez (11-0, 9 KO’s) has been tearing through the pro ranks with a mix of speed and power that has boxing insiders taking notice. The highly regarded 25-year-old Velasquez, who trains out of Las Vegas, owns wins over a series of seasoned veterans and will be put to the test once again as he looks to further cement his status of future star against an opponent to be determined.

Opponents for Sanchez, Wilder and Perez and additional undercard bouts will be announced shortly.

It doesn't have the flow of the wind that shakes the barley and the movie falls way short in telling the story of the hunger strike. You learn more from written words at the introduction and ending than the movie itself.

The movie is divided into three sections for me. The beginning where they show how poorly the prisoners are treated, One scene in the middle (the movie is worth seeing for this along) with a discussion between a priest and Bobby Sands. And the ending which shows the effects of the hunger strike on one guy.

Okay, some of us were picking Devon Alexander, but I don't think very many thought it would be inside the Distance or if they did that it wouldn't be from a volume of punches or maybe a cut, but certainly not like that. Thought it might make an interesting topic to toss around some of those "Didn't think he had it him" Ko's from the Past.

I'm talking ones where you never expected the winning fighter to possibly score a KO, so I'm not including something like the
unexpected turnaround KO's similar to Mike Weaver- John Tate, Jorge Castro-John David Jackson, or Corrales-Castillo. Those guys were pretty good punchers and going into the fight their scoring a KO wasn't all that outlandish a suggestion, it was the circumstances of the fight up to that point that made it so. Lennox Lewis' two KO losses were shocking but Rahman, and certainly McCall, weren't featherfisted. Total unknown James B. Toney (as he was known that night) over Michael Nunn, same thing, it was just that we didn't know anything much about Toney.

No, I'm talking the ones where a KO never crossed your mind.
For most of us, I think Douglas-Tyson would the consensus #1. You could debate that Buster had a bit of power, but to think he'd be on the other side of a KO was crazy. My #2 pick would be Lightning Lonnie Smith over Billy Costello. Smith was a pillow fisted fighter and Costello had been in with some pretty good punchers in his previous fights. I still to this day don't understand it, but for that one night "Lightning Lonnie" showed Thunder.

One I'm tempted to go with is Simon Brown-Terry Norris 1 simply because we went in with fears for Simon's safety based on their first fight being canceled due to flunking the pre-fight physical on the eve of the fight. However, Simon wasn't a bad puncher, and the Jackson fight had hinted that Terry wasn't exactly packing granite.

I end up rationalizing a LOT of the surprise KO's after the fact (as you can see) but I'm putting Alexander-Urango up there with Douglas-Tyson and Smith-Costello. I just wasn't impressed with Devon's Pop going into last night and Urango chin was battle tested already and proven solid. Can you guys think of other fights that might rank as Pillow Fisters turned Powder Kegs for a single night?

Popular, hard-hitting Vic “The Raging Bull” Darchinyan (34-2-1, 27 KOs) successfully defended his WBC/WBA super flyweight crowns with a hard fought twelve round unanimous decision over Rodrigo “Gato” Guerrero (13-2-1, 9 KOs) on Saturday night in the main event on a special edition of ShoBox: The New Generation at The Show at Agua Caliente Casino Resort Spa in Aqua Caliente, California. Guerrero was competitive early, but after that it was a brutal display by Darchinyan, who battered Guerrero but couldn’t put the game challenger on the deck. Scores were 118-110, 117-111, 120-108.

Lightweight Lenny Zappavigna (23-0, 15 KO’s) won a hard-fought 12 round unanimous decision over Fernando Angulo (22-7, 14 KO’s). After the bout began with clenches in the first half of the fight, both fighters had their moments as they traded heavy shots. Zappavigna was cut over his right eye, which gave him problems as blood seeped into his eye. Angulo was deducted a point in the ninth round for hitting on the break.
Angulo pressed the action in the second half of the fight, but Zappavigna finished the bout strong, staying on the outside and landing the more effective punches.
After Devon Alexander knocked out Juan Urango to unify the IBF/WBC junior welterweights titles at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino in CT, former two division champion Zab Judah entered the ring to crash the celebration party. While HBO's Max Kellerman was conducting an interview with Alexander, Judah cut in with some comments.

"This the hardest person [Urango] at 140 and I can beat anybody. I said if I can beat him, I can beat anybody...Zab, Timothy Bradley. Whoever can come get it," Alexander said.

Judah then came in the frame, attempting to duplicate Shane Mosley's in-ring display after Floyd Mayweather Jr. decisioned Juan Manuel Marquez last September.

"I just want to congratulate Devon Alexander on his win tonight. He looked good tonight but we know who holds the title in the Lou," Judah said.

Judah's remark was a verbal jab to point at his knockout win over Cory Spinks from a few years ago in St. Louis.

Alexander shot back and said Judah was the past, and the future is now here. If Judah was trying to secure a shot at Alexander by creating some drama, it didn't work.

"Zab is past tense, I'm present tense. I'm the future and it's going to stay that way for ten years straight," Alexander said.

I was just reading some stuff on Johnny Tapia and came across this BBC article that i read years ago. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/boxing/1533687.stm

It has a brief summary of the horrors of Tapia's life and says: "If someone had pitched Johnny Tapia's life story to a Hollywood studio, it would have been snapped up and turned into a hit movie".

I've always wondered why films have been made about Ali, Graziano, LaMotta etc and later this year Micky Ward but not Tapia.

It is a controversial idea to say the least though. I mean afterall the subject matter within it isn't going to make for easy viewing. I'm thinking merely from Johnny's point of view. Would he WANT a film made about his life? Would he want a production company prying into his life and digging up events from his past that have traumatised his life? On the other hand maybe it would "help" him get it off his chest. Personally, i don't think that would be the case.

Obviously a film about his career would be a hit amongst boxing fans as he is an absolute Legend and i think it would also explain to people exactly WHY he has been in and out of prison, addicted to drugs, attempted suicide... Many people are ignorant and don't even ask (or care) why people do what they do, so this would also act as a example of why many people do what they do.

I just wondered what other people thought of the idea.

FHP: Driver lacked razor-sharp focus
BY ADAM LINHARDT Citizen Staff

As authorities nationwide warn motorists of the dangers of driving while texting, Florida Keys law enforcement officers add a new caution: Don't try to shave your privates, either.

Florida Highway Patrol troopers say a two-vehicle crash Tuesday at Mile Marker 21 on Cudjoe Key was caused by a 37-year-old woman driver who was shaving her bikini area while her ex-husband took the wheel from the passenger seat.

"She said she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit," Trooper Gary Dunick said. "If I wasn't there, I wouldn't have believed it. About 10 years ago I stopped a guy in the exact same spot ... who had three or four syringes sticking out of his arm. It was just surreal and I thought, 'Nothing will ever beat this.' Well, this takes it."

If that weren't enough, Megan Mariah Barnes was not supposed to be driving and her 1995 Ford Thunderbird was not supposed to be on the road.

The day before the wreck, Barnes was convicted in an Upper Keys court of DUI with a prior and driving with a suspended license, said Monroe County Assistant State Attorney Colleen Dunne. Barnes was ordered to impound her car, and her driver's license was revoked for five years, after which time she must have a Breathalyzer ignition interlock device on any vehicle she drives, Dunne said. Barnes also was sentenced to nine months' probation.

Barnes and Charles Judy were southbound in her Thunderbird at 11 a.m. when they slammed into the back of a 2006 Chevrolet pickup driven by David Schoff of Palm Bay. His passengers were a man and two women; the latter were treated for minor injuries at Lower Keys Medical Center, FHP spokesman Alex Annunziato said.

Schoff had slowed to about 5 mph to make a turn when the Thunderbird hit him, traveling about 45 mph, which was within the speed limit, Dunick said.

Barnes allegedly drove another half-mile, then switched seats with Judy, who allegedly claimed to be driving, Annunziato said.

"She jumps in the back seat and he moves over," Dunick said. "It was like the old comedy bit, 'Who's on first?' "

Burns on Judy's chest from the passenger-side airbag deploying belied their story, Dunick said. The airbag in the steering wheel did not deploy, he said.

Troopers charged Barnes with driving with a revoked license, reckless driving, leaving the scene of a wreck with injuries and driving with no insurance. Judy was not charged.

Barnes faces a maximum of a year in jail if found guilty of violating her probation due to the wreck, Dunne said.

"My phone has been ringing off the hook all day, and I know there's a funny side to this, but it's also deadly serious. This is a scary road and a lot of bad wrecks are caused by dumb stuff like this," Dunick said. "It is unbelievable. I'm really starting to believe this stuff only happens in the Keys."

Great wars at 160lbs
By Joe Queijo from Seconds Out

Joe Queijo remembers some of the classic middleweight battles including Harry Greb vs Mickey Walker, Tony Zale vs Rocky Graziano, Marvin Hagler vs Thomas Hearns and Robert Duran (pictured) vs Iran Barkley.

Bob Fitzsimmons w ko 13 Nonpareil Jack Dempsey (14 January, 1894)
The original Jack Dempsey was supreme middleweight title-holder when lightly-regarded Fitzsimmons appeared on the scene in 1891. English-born Fitzsimmons gave the brave champion a vicious beating, repeatedly knocking him down. Dempsey refused to give and kept trying to land a haymaker to fell the ambitious challenger. Fitzsimmons floored the brave champion 13 times before finally winning in 13th round. Fitzsimmons would then become first heavyweight champion and then light-heavyweight king.

Harry Greb w pts 15 Mickey Walker (2 July, 1925)
A bout between two Hall of Famers. Middleweight champ Greb proved too good for reigning welterweight title-holder Walker as both swapped blows for the entire contest with Greb nearly finishing of his foe in the 14th before taking the decision. Hours after the bout, both slugged it out again in a New York bar with Walker claiming a kayo!

Tony Zale w ko Rocky Graziano (27 September, 1946)
Middleweight king Zale floored the challenger in the first, only for Rocky to get up and hammer the champion with a frightening barrage. Zale took a vicious beating, but suddenly in the sixth landed a perfect left hook to the body which kayoed Rocky.

Sugar Ray Robinson w ko 13 Jake LaMotta (14 February, 1951)
The sixth meeting between both men (Robinson won the series 5-1). LaMotta was the reigning middleweight title-holder with Robinson moving up after being untouchable as welterweight champ. Robinson took the first four rounds with his hard jab and jolting combinations. The champion roared back with cracking body shots to take the next four rounds. Robinson upped the tempo in the ninth as he let loose fearsome blows. It was only LaMotta’s famous iron chin that let him absorb such a beating without falling, but in the 13th another vicious combination convinced the referee to stop the now one-sided bout.

Carmen Basilio w pts 15 Sugar Ray Robinson (23 September, 1957)
Welterweight kingpin Basilio surprised Robinson by getting inside his seven and half inch reach and battering him to the body. Basilio stunned the champion in the 11th on the way to a thrilling split decision victory.

Nino Benvenuti w pts 15 Emile Griffith (17 April, 1967)
First bout of a thrilling trilogy. Italy’s Benvenuti shocked the champion by flooring him in the second only for Griffith to roar back and drop the challenger in the fourth. Both land telling shots in a fast-paced encounter with Benvenuti coming on strong in the latter rounds to take a deserved decision.

Marvin Hagler w ko 3Thomas Hearns (15 April, 1985)
Both unload on each other in a tremendous first round. Hagler seemingly took control in the second only to suffer a doctor’s inspection in the third because of a badly cut right eye. Hagler, facing possible defeat, suddenly landed a Rocky-esque leaping right hook, which stunned the challenger who fell after another southpaw right.

Roberto Duran w pts 12 Iran Barkley (24 February, 1989)
The 37-year-old Duran stunned his bigger opponent in the first. Both were hurt in a wild fourth with Duran nearly falling in the eighth from a wicked left hook. Duran came on strong down the stretch as he floored the champion in the 11th on the way to a popular split decision win.
The 37-year-old Duran stunned his bigger opponent in the first. Both were hurt in a wild fourth with Duran nearly falling in the eighth from a wicked left hook. Duran came on strong down the stretch as he floored the champion in the 11th on the way to a popular split decision win.
